Critical Review Electron Crystallography of Aquaporins
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aquaporins are a family of ubiquitous membrane proteins that form a pore for the permeation of water. Both electron and X-ray crystallography played major roles in determining the atomic structures of a number of aquaporins. This review focuses on electron crystallography, and its contribution to the field of aquaporin biology. We briefly discuss electron crystallography and the two-dimensional crystallization process. We describe features of aquaporins common to both electron and X-ray crystallographic structures; as well as some structural insights unique to electron crystallography, including aquaporin junction formation and lipid-protein interactions. 2008 IUBMB IUBMB Life, 60(7): 430–436, 2008

متن کامل3rd International conference on structure, dynamics and function of proteins in biological membranes.
The conference was arranged for the third time and consisted of lectures given by the leading researchers in membrane proteins field as well as poster session. The topics of the conference covered the structure and function of ion channels, electron transfer proteins, transporters, receptors, and aquaporins. Such proteins were described at the atomic level, as well as in the context of the nati...

Electron crystallography is used to study membrane proteins in the form of planar, two-dimensional (2D) crystals, or other crystalline arrays such as tubular crystals. This method has been used to determine the atomic resolution structures of bacteriorhodopsin, tubulin, aquaporins, and several other membrane proteins. In addition, a large number of membrane protein structures were studied at a ...
متن کاملThe X-ray Transform and its Application in Nano Crystallography
In this article a review on the definition of the X- ray transform and some ofits applications in Nano crystallography is presented. We shall show that the X- raytransform is a special case of the Radon transform on homogeneous spaces when thetopological group E(n)- the Euclidean group - acts on ℝ2 transitively. First someproperties of the Radon transform are investigated then the relationship ...
متن کاملPresent and future of membrane protein structure determination by electron crystallography.
Membrane proteins are critical to cell physiology, playing roles in signaling, trafficking, transport, adhesion, and recognition. Despite their relative abundance in the proteome and their prevalence as targets of therapeutic drugs, structural information about membrane proteins is in short supply. This chapter describes the use of electron crystallography as a tool for determining membrane pro...
